A study of the erythrocyte survival tine during storage

Abstract
To clarifying the optimal permissible period of transfusion in Korean blood bank, we studied the erythrocyte survival time and chemical changes during storage.
The total samples were taken from the 32 blood donors according to the standard procedures, and preserved to the Korean fabricated glass bottles in ACD solution.
From each donor¢¥s blood, total of 26 blood samples which were kept in 4-6 ¢¥c, each consisting of about 20 cc of ACD mixed blood were drawn and Tested 1, 2, 3, 7, 10, 14, 17, 19, 21, 23, 28, 30 days.
For each of these samples, MeB. uptake test, Osmotic fragility T., Hb, Hct, Prothrombin time, Na, Cl, K+, Protein, were carried out.
An interpretative analysis of the results were done and following conclusions were made;
1. From MeB. uptake test of erythrocytes which indicated the metabolic activity of erythrocytes, the satisfactory permissible period of storage was 17 days.
2. From the Osmotic fragility test, the well preserved period of erythrocytes was 17 days.
3. The prothrombin time was prolonged since after 21 days during storage. 4. The K.,, level was elevated since after 7 days during storage.
5. The Hb., Protein, were gradually increased during storage, while Na, Cl, Hct., were gradually
decreased.
